Common Questions About Leak Detection For Swimming Pools
We get quite a few questions each day as a local pool leak detector, so we actually did make a full FAQ page to check out if you'd like. There's so much to talk about with our Arizona weather and how it can affect your pool. But here are a few of the common ones that people ask us regularly. Also be sure to get regular pool service done to help minimize the chance of a leak. We can't stress that enough because often pool guys are the first to notice something unusual with a swimming pool and can help save you some money on your water bill.
Where Do Most Pool Leaks Occur?
Most pool leaks occur in the plumbing fittings and piping connections. Second is accessories like light fixtures or railings. Third is the shell or liner of the swimming pool. These are the 3 most common areas we find for leaks in a residential swimming pool. Commercial pools are most often in the filter piping and fittings or railings connections. With the volume of people using the railings, we find them broken often.
How Can I Tell If My Pool Is Leaking?
Several factors can be used to help you see if you have a pool leak. Here is a simple way for a pool owner to perform a mini version of leak detection called a DIY Bucket Test:
1. Get the tools: Get a bucket, a measuring tape or ruler, and a pen or marker.
2. Mark the water level: Measure the water level in your pool and mark the water level on the inside of the bucket with a pen or marker.
3. Fill the bucket: Fill the bucket with water from the pool, making sure to match the water level inside the bucket with the water level in the pool.
4. Place the bucket in the pool: Place the bucket on the pool steps (usually the 2nd one), making sure that the water level inside the bucket is still at the same level as the level in the pool.
5. Turn off the Auto-Fill: Go to your pump equipment and turn off the auto-fill feature if you have one. This stops the pool from bringing new water in during our test.
6. Check the water level: Leave the bucket in the pool for 24 to 48 hours and observe the water level in the bucket. If the water level outside the bucket drops more than the water inside, it could mean that your pool has a leak. If it’s within 1 inch of each other, you might be OK. Redo the test if the water level is close.
These are not the only ways to determine a pool leak. but they are the most common signs that many homeowners leverage before calling a leak detection company. So take a few minutes and review them for your own swimming pool.

Are Pool Leaks Covered By Homeowners Insurance?
If the leak and damage was caused by serious peril like a fire, windstorm, hail or something similar yes insurance could cover a pool leak. However, homeowners insurance does not cover any other circumstance from what we understand. Insurance does not pay for damages caused by lack or maintenance or neglect or common wear and tear. The vast majority of leaks we discover in Glendale are caused by normal wear and tear and rarely are covered by insurance.
Please consult with your specific insurance provider. We are not insurance experts and cannot provide an exact recommendation for every customer or reader on their exact leak. We are only explaining our experience with many of our pools.

Can You Also Make The Repair If You Find A Leak?
We definitely can help you with pool repairs after we discover and locate a leak. As an FYI though, repairs a separate charge and can vary in price depending on the location and the circumstances of the pool leak. Each situation is treated differently and we'd provide you a quote with our findings after discovering a pool leak. It will be specific to your pool and how much it would cost to fix it. We've repaired dozens of pools in our time so we have a solid idea of the costs to repair most leak situations.
What Should We Do After Fixing A Pool Leak?
If you don't have one already, we highly recommend you connect with a local pool service company. There are several in the Valley and you should have someone regularly coming to clean, skim, vacuum and pH test the pool to keep it up. Regular pool maintenance is a necessity and should be treated as such. If you want to DIY this, be prepared to invest your time in this aspect.
